Send Us Your Jira Export

When we are troubleshooting an issue with your Jira Service Management (Data Center) archive, we will tell you exactly what we need and ask for only that - we don't want you to hand over your entire instance.

In most cases we ask for a structural or metadata export rather than a full dump of your Jira PostgreSQL database, so you do not need to export (or share) all of your business records.

What we'll ask for

We will specify the exact scope when we raise a request. This might be:

  • Metadata / structure — the Jira schema (tables, columns, and relationships) plus the lookup tables (such as issuestatus, customfield, priority) so statuses and priorities render as readable values rather than numeric IDs.
  • Specific records — a bounded set of issues or configuration data relevant to the issue.
  • Attachments — only if the problem involves attachment data. If so, note the details below.

For the underlying processes for producing data (pg_dump / pg_restore, pgAdmin, Jira's built-in backup, and which tables to include), see Getting Your Jira Data.

Attachments (if needed)

Jira stores attachments on disk, separately from the database. If we ask for attachment data, include the relevant files alongside any database content you send.

The default Jira home directory locations are:

  • Windows: C:\Program Files\Atlassian\Application Data\JIRA
  • Linux: /var/atlassian/application-data/JIRA

Attachments are stored in the data/attachments subdirectory within the Jira home directory.

note

Attachment folders can be very large. Use your preferred file transfer utility to move them to the target location.

If you have orphaned attachment records (files on disk without a database record, or vice versa), run Jira's Integrity Checker before exporting so the data is consistent.

Sending the file

Once we've agreed what to send, if it is too large to attach to an email, we can work with a OneDrive or Google Drive link, or we recommend Our Box Drive. Contact us if you need to arrange a more secure transfer method.
