Hiding Platform Nav Menu Items

An install that does not use every Platform area can keep the navigation menu focused by hiding the items it does not need. The Navigation tab under Admin → System Settings holds a checkbox for each Platform nav item, and a hidden item disappears from the menu for every user, administrators included.

Hiding an item

  1. Open Admin → System Settings and select the Navigation tab. The tab is available on an install whose licence includes Platform; the checkbox for an item is only offered where the item can actually appear, so the Mail Monitor checkbox shows only when Mail Monitoring is licensed.

  2. Tick the item you want to hide:

    • Hide the "Objects" nav item
    • Hide the "Actions" nav item
    • Hide the "Dashboards" nav item
    • Hide the "Mail Monitor" nav item
  3. Save. The setting takes effect in the navigation menu the next time the menu is rendered.

Unchecked is the default and shows the item, so an install that never opens this tab behaves exactly as it did before the setting existed. Unticking a box and saving brings the item back.

The settings can be changed by an account with edit rights on System Settings; without them the tab is read-only.

What hiding an item does and does not do

  • It removes the nav link. The page behind the item stays reachable by its URL, so a bookmark or an existing link still works.
  • It applies to every user, not only to the person who set it. It is not a per-user preference.
  • Hiding Dashboards also hides that menu's own entries (Home, Manage Dashboards and Browse Widgets), because they live under the item.
  • The Platform dashboard that Cortex opens as the Platform landing page is deliberately left alone - the setting changes the menu, not what is on the page.
  • Mail Monitor is hidden in the Platform navigation only.
note

Hiding a nav item is a presentation setting, not an access control. To stop a group of users reaching an area at all, use their Cortex security group instead - see Security Groups.
